class

class was awesome this semester. i really learned a lot and i am very excited for the class to have our own website =]
coming in to this class...i knew nothing! i still had some trouble with some steps but I somehow would figure it out sometimes. lol
Looking back..i would have never known how much hard work people put on websites! It's a lot of work!
I'm glad i took this class though, the professor was very nice, and she's very patient with everyone! lol Hope I can still remember everything I learned for future reference =]\

Something Happened

its interesting! i think....i mean after thinking about not needing the class i ended up wanting art as something I would want to do for life. Im even considering it as a major at that point but those damn codes get the best of me. All in all i kept rolling with the work and little by little im getting into it.

-Jose Aguilar

First Impressions...again

Towards the middle of the semester I started thinking twice again of the class and how i would never need it in my life. I struggled through the work....again and i felt intimidated.....again. I even when as far as withdrawing from the class but i never expected something else to happen to me.

WEBSITES PT I

Here are the first batch of websites that i found interesting through out the semester:

http://www.dontclick.it/
No clicking needed!

http://www.strangefacts.com
strange but true!

The first.

- Jose Aguilar

I never did an essay...

...for this class, except the research one but even then i kinda regret not doing one. I could have gotten a perfect score because of them but still it leaves me regret. In the end i dont really consider it a negative effect towards my grade but towards my willingness to do more than just whats expected.

Some Websites Not Working

If anyone’s reading this, I noticed a couple of people’s website links went to a file-not -found page. Mine did too but I found out the problem was a capitalized Index.html page. The index.html file has to be lower case. The links back to the home page also must be corrected. I’m glad I stayed Tuesday to make sure the upload worked. The professor might try to remedy it on the final day. If your website isn’t working for this reason you might want to fix this problem ahead of time and have it ready on the 15th. I’m just giving everyone a heads up.

I got a job on Campus

After all works done, I have a time to think about what I want to do next and what is more important for me. I was lose my power and confidence to be own self because I am so sick. Now even I can't spelling my daughter name. But today I got a job on campus and can start to work. I am so happy. Not because the money, is this job can give courage to continue my life. I still can do somethings. Maybe because I am alway helped others. So, they help me to got this job. Anyway what I want to say is power come from who you are, not what you have.

Wish everyone get the work done and get an A on this class .

My thoughts suck.....

After receiving my first grade for my first project, I didnt think of it as much. Mostly because I thought it wasnt creative enough. I guess i just settled for what i got but I knew my creativity would have to be more..............creative?

Its not too late to start!

My first of many post and hopefully it won't be my last. Well what else is there to say than my experience with the first project? Just one word: STRESS. I came to this class knowing nothing and seeing how people easily handled this assignment was intimidating. I did my best by staying after class and trying harder but in the end I knew this would be the stepping stone in continuing my interest in art and design. I might even make Graphic Designing my major? Who knows...

What I get from this class?

What is blog? I don't know that before this class. What is facebook and never have one. Create a website? after Project one, It come out so bad. I want to drop the class because I see other student works was very good. Maybe for other student think that this class didn't learn a lot. But for me is big different for my rest my life. Because day by day I getting more sick. So, I can do more things in the house when I can go out on more. So Can Create my own website to let my friend and family to know what happen to me in last few year. I am so happy that I stay to the end on this class to learn all this things.

It's Finally The End

Well, it's finally the end of the semester in about a week or so and I feel very accomplished after taking this class. I've learned so much from art 201 and I feel like I have a good grasp on the basics of all of the programs we've learned. I may have even learned a little more than I expected for photoshop since I just recently got it from a friend. With most of these programs, it just takes playing with the program and practicing. Most of the people I know that thoroughly understand many if not all of the adobe programs are all self-taught. So if you can get your hands on Adobe Suite, I suggest just having fun with the programs and learning along the way, just like we did in this class. Professor Anderson made it fun with an enthusiastic environment. She's what made the class so great and so fun to learn. It may have been a bit tedious and frustrating at times, but that's what made it all the better once you figured out your problem. Overall, I had an amazing experience in this class and gained so much knowledge; knowledge that I can now use later on in life. It was a great semester, thanks guys!

2nd to Last Post

I know this has nothing to do with web design, but as many of you know I'm obsessed with soccer and if you were to read this blog and look back at the projects, you'll know which ones were mine. Anyways, last Friday December 5th, I was extremely excited to see that the draw for all the teams in the World Cup were announced. The draw is when they literally pull the country names that have qualified for the World Cup out of a bowl and separate them into 8 groups of 4. Even though the tournament isn't until June 2010, I'm already counting down the days. I'm so STOKED! It's like Christmas in June!

-Marcello Sanceau

Project 3 Reflection Paragraph

I was just looking through all the blogs and noticed that everyone has been mentioning this reflection paragraph. Well guess what, I didn't know about it either. Now aside from finishing up two more blog entries, I must quickly whip up a paragraph reflecting on my project that I already am not too proud of. Alright, enough of me being emo! I'm ready to do this thing!

-Marcello Sanceau

The end of school

This semester is almost over now. My classes end pretty much on this week.
I have 2 projects due on this Thursday and Friday. I am almost close to finish these projects, but I still feel nervous >_<  I am also graduating this semester. I cannot believe that I do not need to come to school any more. It feels a little wired. Well, instead, I have to go to work every day, I guess. Anyway, on 15th, the last day of this class will be the last day of my school, too. I am looking forward to the day, especially I get to see all students last projects! I will be fun.

Mai Shiiyama

Dr. Sketchy's

Do you know about Dr. Sketchy ??
Well, actually, i have never attended their events before, but one of my professors informed us this organization. I think every month(?) they hold a sketching event, and all you need is bring your sketch book and a pencil and they will have cool models for you to draw. The event looks cool. All models that they have are really funky and it is good for social net working for art students, too :)

If you are interested in, check the link here!

Mai Shiiyama
Okay so I totally forgot that we had to have a paragraph written for Project 3. Guess I didn't read the directions well. So now I'm off to write it but I'm struggling to put my thoughts behind the concept of my website into words. Wish I would have known earlier that if you had already finished your project that you did not need to be here either... I could have slept in! Oh well, I suppose I have extra time to study for finals. I have to get ready for that.

Courtney- blog #9

Hello all!

I come bearing free photoshop stuff as always. This time, I'm afraid I won't be handing out a URL, but you can still benefit from it if you are a Twitter user. Just follow @freeloadthis and get free textures, brushed, stock photos, fonts and more!!!

-Courtney Custodio

Slightly Embarrassed

Last night I was up pretty late doing some blog entries and realized that I was probably one of the last in the class to be turning them in. Now that I log back in I've also noticed that no one else has posted any after mine, which leads me to believe that every ones is done. I'm a little embarrassed because I waited so long and literally waited until the last minute or day. I hope I'm not marked off, since they'll be all in by today December 8th.

-Marcello Sanceau

Research Paper

So, I was looking at the my grade sheet and under the research paper it was blank. I did not do the research paper because I submitted a class project design. I actually thought that was equivalent to the research paper. Now I'm actually getting a little a nervous.

Can anyone that did the class project let me know if they've received points for the research paper section under our grade sheet? Thank you.

-Marcello Sanceau

Anxious for Project 3

Project 3 is going to be epic. I can't wait to see what crazy designs people have created this time around. I was actually able to see a few as they were being turned in and I must say I was and am really intimidated by what I saw. Some of the work our peers are doing seems like they've been designing for years.

My project on the other hand I'm a little disappointed about. It was actually my same project 2 with some minor changes, but one addition that I was really proud of was rollover's on my homepage. I don't want to describe it too much because I want everyone to see it next week.

Hopefully I don't get completely torn to pieces during the critiquing session.

-Marcello Sanceau

Response to Tim's Best of 201

I actually did get to catch a glimpse of Danielle's project three and it looked great! I'm really excited to see it on the 15th.

I wish I knew everyone's names, but I guess I can describe them for you:

1: I would say it was your Project 2 (Tim), it was designed very well and as a viewer I could tell there was a lot of passion put into the design.

2: Danielle's Project 2 with the letter's of her name leading to pages that depicted her joys in life.

3: I'm not sure who's project this was, but it was actually project one. The project showed that the individual was a photographer and it showed his photography throughout the site.

-Marcello Sanceau

Photoshop Question

I've been playing with photoshop almost everyday and have been wondering how to touch up people. I've been asked by friends to enhance their pictures and I'd love to help them, but I just don't know how to do it. Some frequently asked questions friends have asked me have been, "Can you remove wrinkles and blotches?" and "Can you make me skinnier and tan," sadly enough, I have no clue how to do this and can't help them out. Does anyone know how to do this? Let me know...Thank you!

-Marcello Sanceau

Photoshop is the Best

Since I began this class, I've become so intrigued by all the programs we've used. They are all so amazing, but the one that has stood out the most has been Photoshop. The program is fun and complex. Many wouldn't expect something so complex to also be entertaining and fun, but it just sucks you in. I can spend hours just touching up the colors of a small section of a photograph and feel like I have accomplished so much; it's a great feeling. Since I fell in love with this program, I just had to have it, but I did NOT want to spend hundreds of dollars for something I didn't thoroughly understand. Lucky enough for me, I just so happened to have a friend with the program who kindly installed it on my laptop for me. Now, it's all I do on my spare time.

-Marcello Sanceau

My First One!

Well, given this is my first one, I'm not quite sure where to start. I'm not going to reflect on the semester because it's too early to do so since I'm on blog entry 1 of 10. I would like to take the time and look back at the first assignments. They were all just so tedious and annoying, yet they were informative and without those first couple html coding assignments we would not know what the heck all that gibberish is. Now, when I visit websites, one of the first things I tend to do is view the site's source, a lot of the times, I don't understand 80 to 90 percent of it, but I do know where it starts and finishes, what every bracket means, and what most of the codes mean. It's great to be able to say that, at least for me it is.

Last post, good luck!

Just wanted to wish everyone good luck on their finals. I'm sure everybody is weary by now, but the holidays are just two weeks away, then we're off until the third week of January.

Hey, some of us are not coming back at all! Woo-hoo!

Then the reality of a dismal job market smashes us in the face. Boo-hoo!

Anyway, it's time finish the job; time to go to BATTLE!

Take care, all!

Open source alternative?

I want to continue learning and experimenting with Dreamweaver and Photoshop; does anyone know where I can get a good deal on both? I looked on Amazon, NewEgg and Fry's; all of them list Adobe Suite CS4 Web Premium Student Edition for $350.

If that's the best deal, can somebody recommend a Dreamweaver and Photoshop open source alternative?

Tim Nguyen

Applying new skills

I plan on using everything I learned this semester for the Matador Boxing Team's website. The old site crashed about a year ago and nobody had the time or know-how to rebuild it. Now that I'm somewhat familiar with Dreamweaver and Photoshop, I want to build my team a new site before I walk in the spring.

On a side note, if any of you are interested in boxing, feel free to come down to the gym (we're located next to the swimming pool). Our hours are Monday - Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Whether you want to get in shape, release some stress on the heavy bag or train for amateur competitions, we accommodate everyone.

Tim Nguyen

ughhhhh

i'm still not done with project three. i've been so caught up with other classes and personal issues. seriously, hands down, this is the worst semester ever. web design is the only class that ISN'T driving me insane.

Hopefully I finish proj 3 on Tuesday. I think i missed an exercise as well. Blaahhh. I'm so glad this semester is finally coming to an end but honestly, i'm going to miss this class :(

anywayyyy back to doing research for my nine page paper which i have yet started and is due Wednesday. Yayyyyyyy!

thanks GOD the library is open 24 hours this week. I'm going to be living here for awhile.

Besides our class page, does anyone here read blogs? If so, what do you recommend? I'm always looking for new, interesting reads.

The following are some of my favorites:

Almost there...

I just realized that this is the only class I actually enjoyed this semester. Sure, the work was tedious, but the overall experience was enriching and fulfilling. To reiterate what some people here have expressed: I want to learn more!

I'm really looking forward to connecting all your projects to the homepage. I did the best I could considering the time constraints. I swear, I'm impressed and intimidated by the work some of you are doing.

I have a few more names to add and some minor tweaks to make to the word balloons, but they'll all be completed on Tuesday.

Now, time to hit the quizzes.

-Tim Nguyen

Best of ART 201

Out of curiosity, what were some of your favorite projects from this semester? My top three:

1. Courtney's Nintendo-themed project one and two.
2. Tom G.'s wacky project two.
3. Logan's superhero-themed project one and two.

Finally Done with Everything

Well I finally finished my online quizzes and final exam. Our critique is just left now (extremely excited about that). Yay! I feel relieved but those were seriously some hard quizzes. I had to think extremely hard for almost all of the questions and it took me forever. However, the nice thing about online quizzes is that it is at home...in an environment I'm comfortable in, so I don't have a panic attack about doing well. I always had a problem with becoming overly nervous when taking quizzes/tests where they depended on my grade, leading to me forgetting basic information like even my own name! However, with these quizzes, though they were hard, I was able to concentrate much better and my brain did not shut off. I love online quizzes now!

By the way, are there any other classes such as this that we can take going towards our general ed.? I loved this class so much and I want to go further with this.

Done with Last Project!!!

Like many people were posting about it here, I am also so glad that I finally finished my last project for this class!!!! I have taken a web-making class before in ctva department, but I leaned more other staff that you can do with dreamweaver in this class, and I am so happy about it. :)
Also, I am excited to see other students projects in critique class. Yeay :D

=O

There's a paragraph for project three?!?!? lol wow I didn't know that, I'm guessing I'm not alone, well i hope not. Ok random question, but for certain programs on macs, do you need like a usb key? Well for xps, there's programs like avid liquid that requires a usb key plugged in as you use the program. I'm just wondering if that's the case for any other high quality program for Macs. Funny how I'm asking this question even though I know nobody's going to read this or even bother to reply. There's a good chance that you'll comment on this professor, but i won't be about to see it after all everyone's trying to send in blogs and my post will be pushed away into the depths of the blog, if that even made sense.

Tutorials and my experience!

I wish I didn't have so much to do at the end of this semester so I could have worked more on my Project 3. I hope you all like it, it's a choose your own adventure starring action figures of all kinds. Unfortunately, since I also have been working on a video game for another class, and some other final projects, I could only procure one story line. The website was going to have 2 story lines but since it took a lot of Photoshop work, I was lucky to finish just the one. I do, however plan to finish eventually. I hope you all like it when you see it. :)

ok, well I can't end this blog without directing you to a cool tutorial site or something that might help you all. Here is another helpful page from PSDTUTS+. Did you know you can MAKE your own icons in photoshop?

DONE!

wow I'm finally done with project 3. I drew a good 20 images in illustrator for this project. I tried to make it as humorous as i can, thats the type of person i am after all. I after linking all the urls on hotspots and pages for my site i thought i was finished and good to go. Sadly, my directory wasn't in order, i forgot to create a image folder =O. So the pathways for all my links and images were mixed up =( so i had to redo everything took me a good 1hr and half just for a 10 pages website.

Most difficult time in my life

Almost every one have a same feeling that done the final project. speacal me. Because I am sick and this kind the sick is never go away. Day by day I will forget every things happen in the past. Also, every things I learn today, I will forget 50% next day. So this class for me is mission a possible. What ever other Student spend one to done there project in class and I need three hour. So, I alway worked over night for my project. But I still go though and I very happy what I done. But, I can't have computer class no more. The Doctor told me that few month ago. This few month was most difficult time in my life. I don't have best website on this class but I am sure I did best job in my life. What A Week!!!

So we're all finally done with Project 3!!! Yay! I'm happy to be done because it came at a very stressful time. However, I still wish beyond anything that I had some magical means to give myself more time on the project because I was really excited about making it look like my vision. I had so many other web pages that I wanted to add to my project from my original sketch, making my story even more juicier, but time constraints would not allow that, on top of losing my files. As I said before, I had lost my files because of my lovely laptop but the fates were at it again once more last night. Luck was completely against me as my Illustrator crashed on me at the last moment yesterday night. I stayed up all last night re-making those lost images on Illustrator by installing the program on my father's computer and working there instead. (I absolutely hate using images from the internet unless it's necessary so I create mostly my own.)Although, they were not my best work, I think I did a pretty good job getting them done. And of course, I lost time last week because of my hives so all in all it was a pretty crappy time for anything to really be done.

I just hope everyone else didn't encounter too many obstacles like I did and made theirs stunning. I can't wait to critique them but don't judge mine too harshly because of my issues hehe. It isn't my normal work but I hope I did okay. I'll be glad when finals are over but I don't want to give up this class. I really had so much fun and wish that after finals we had a project because I could totally make that project perfect. Phew! At least I survived my first semester as a Freshman at CSUN...waiting for more fun to come!

Yesterday 12/2/2009

I was going crazy yesterday. I came to my 2-4:something class and i was working on project three(the e book). When i was done and class was over i went home. I was going to start working the project at home when i noticed that I didn't have my usb. I was going crazy looking for it in my bag. I rush back to school. on my way to school i had all the saints down from heaven..:) hoping that my usb was still there. other wise i would have to start all over again. not only project three but some other projects i have been doing. Well I went in to the class, and my usb was still there.
I went back home with a HUGE smile in my face.

Are you ready?!

I don't know about you guys, but I'm FIRED UP to get the job done today. But before we finish up Project Three, let me ask everybody one question: what time is it?

GAME TIME

Hit those quizzes over the weekend, study up for the final, post a few blogs and give Professor Anderson a big hug at the end because WE'RE ALMOST DONE.

Good luck today, everyone!

the class picture

I like the class picture we took it came out very nicely. I think we all look great and it makes you smile when you look at it. The purple wall added a nice artistic touch instead of a plain wall.

- Ashley Dvorak
I have to do project 3 I started on it a week ago but it just seems like we have not had enough time to do this one. I feel stressed already with the amount of work I have. I commute about an 1 and a half. My boyfriends father just died and I have to write an eight page paper, design a website and another 5 page paper in a week. I like the idea behind project 3 but I sure could of used more time to complete this ! I even worked outside of class and it's just very time consuming... I need a vacation.
- Ashley Dvorak
Quizzes, quizzes, quizzes....I really do need to get the rest done. Finals are coming up and I'm overloaded with projects. Now, quizzes and tests are added to that overload. I don't really mind the projects that I've been getting from my classes because it's been a lot of fun doing them; I just need to find the time to fit everything in!!! I do wish I could take this class over again so when I have more time, I can spend time doing a better job on my projects. There are so many improvements that I'd like to make to them. I just hope I'm going to be satisfied with Project 3.

Yasmin Chowdhury

Why I love my laptop

Very upset with my computer at this point! I had most of Project 3 completed over the break and then my wonderful laptop decided to make all the files disappear like magic! What else could be better than files disappearing before the due date? Well so now I'm off to revive the files that disappeared or recreate them some way. Hopefully I get it done before it's due. So all in all, I love my Acer laptop because it's given my nothing but joy for the last few weeks.

Cyber Monday sales

Adding to Danielle's post: if you purchased items on Cyber Monday, what deals did you take advantage of? Regarding site design, what were your impressions of the online retailer(s) you bought from?

I scored "Batman: Arkham Asylum" (Xbox 360), "Marvel v. Capcom 2" (XBLA download), "Ghostbusters: the Video Game" (Xbox 360) and some new DLC for "Fight Night Round 4" (Xbox 360) for about $60 on Amazon.

I swear, Amazon.com has the best prices for just about everything. Aside from buying crap, Amazon's site design is clean, user-friendly and intuitive. I wonder how long it would take for newbs like me to learn to build a site like that.

The end of semester!!!

Tablets

Ever notice how professor Anderson doesn't use a mouse to control the curser on her computer. If you look closely you will notice that she is using a pen with a large pad. This thing is called a tablet and it is amazing. It is especially good for artists who use a computer because it is like virtually drawing onto the computer screen when you use photoshop and illustrator programs. These tablets are very high tech and can sure cost you a pretty penny. The leading maker of these tablets is wacom, check out their website to find out more

these tablets are so much fun to use and you will surely be amazed at what you can do with this technology it is amazing!

FInally last exercise =]

The last exercise was a little confusing, but then again, i always get lost =/
I still managaed to pull it through of course with the help of the professor and my classmate.
Now starting on project 3 is a little tough, I still don't really know what I am going to do, but i have my ideas set up. I can't wait tio see how our class website looks in then, I'm excited to see how that come out =]

Class Homepage

Hey all,

Thanks for selecting my concept for the class home page. I'm horribly green to Web design, but under Professor Anderson's guidance, the following is the progress I've made so far:

  • Converted the main image and word balloon into a PNG.
  • Divided the main image into six sections.
  • Created an AP element on the page.
  • Placed a 3x3 table inside.
  • Inserted each section of the main image into the table.
  • Created a word balloon template for names.
  • Created hot spots over each character's face.

So much work to do, so little time. I can't wait to get back to work on Tuesday.

Quizzes

Okay so I thought I had my quizzes all sorted out and then I realized that I needed to take some more because they became available now. It is nice taking online quizzes because you can take them whenever you want to and when you feel you're ready. For the very first quiz, I like studied for three hours thinking it was going to be extremely hard, only to realize it was only five questions. I suppose that was the nice part of it because it was stress free. As much as I like taking them online, I don't want to take any more quizzes at the moment! However, I have to so now I'm off to take the quizzes.

I can't wait to get our grades for project 2 so I will know where to improve on for project 3. I know that there were a couple of places where I screwed up in terms of alignment etc. so I have to be more careful on that. Again that was for time purposes so hopefully this time I get it right.

Yasmin Chowdhury
Ok so while working on this project, it really got me thinking about majors. I've always been interested in art but for some reason I did not ever think about majoring in it. I took nearly 10 art classes in my four years of high school and I did think about it then but I never pursued. Taking this class has really been a lot of fun for me and I completely enjoyed every project and exercise we've had no matter how hard they have been. It's got be thinking about at least minoring in some type of art major. I need to research the jobs but I think I may want to go into something with graphic design. I'm excited to find out more.

Project 3 is coming along

Well the Thanksgiving Weekend was not exactly my ideal vision. I ended up with hives for nearly 3 days and lost 2 days of sleep because of my swollen arms, which prevented me from typing or working on our project. However, I'm back now and better so hopefully I can get this project done! So far I'm having a blast working on this story because it really allows me to open up my creativity pipes in my brain. I'm excited to see everyone else's projects so hopefully everyone else finishes on time!

Smile with Ming

Smile though your heart is miracle

Smile even though it's breaking when the sky are clouds

If you smile through your fear and sorrow

Smile today and tomorrow

You'll see the sun come through for you

Light up your face with gladness

Hide every trace of sadness

Although a tear may be ever so near

That's the time you must keep on trying

Smile, You'll find that life is miracle.

Happy thanksgiving! Ming Ying Lee

Server maintenance check

I was wondering what happens during a server check for websites and any online programs. I was just on Chase banking online and they were on a maintenance check so i couldnt pay my bills >=O. Then i went to youtube, above it stated that they too, was undergoing a server check as well. Yet when i view videos everything seems just fine. So im wondering whats going how can some sites work and others don't... I should worry about my bills first though.

project 2

I really liked project 2 and the concept behind telling each of our individual stories. I found it very interesting to see how everybody viewed themselves. I really thought their was alot of creativity in this class along with some pretty deep thought behind the project. I can't wait to do project 3.

Animated Gifs

I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to put hotspots on animated gif images. I know the professor said it might not be possible to do it that way but during project 2 I saw someone else using an animated image and being able to click on them to another page. So if anyone has other alternatives to make a moving picture on a different type of file and create hotspots please let me know because it would help my project come along nicely.

research paper

I thought the research project was interesting I really liked the site that I got to check out. It was called 18th street and it was interesting because I never knew about this place. Along with that it was fun to analyze the site design as well for the first time. I really liked the basic lay out of the site but this time instead of just looking at it to gather information , I noticed the poor organization of the site. Interesting place I would like to visit it some time!

Class Designs

I really wanted to submit the ideas for the class design very badly but my first semester of University caught up with me. I had a few ideas for a design but since it had to be developed in photoshop etc. I did not have the time to create it. I had so many research papers all due on top of one another and my nose was buried in books for most of the last two weeks that coming near the computer to do anything other than typing my papers would be such a penalty. However, I am really excited to see everyone else's designs because I did hear the professor praising a few!

Hopefully, my project three can be stunning enough to impress everyone, though I am struggling to make the design match the one I drew on paper. Computer art can be so difficult sometimes but I would rather do that than spend time doing research projects...ewwww!

project three

I'm getting excited for project three now :)

I'm going to do something different from my previous stuff. It's a really dark and morbid concept. I hope people don't see me differently after haha I just thought I'd do something fun and creepy. I was inspired by the example website prof. anderson showed us (the one with the large baby and small couple). Mine is darker though. I'll give you two words: insane asylum. :)

flash in dreamweaver

sickkk using flash in dreamweaver is so much better than using gifs. Gifs cerves its purpose but its boring sometimes, so i perfer flash animations. In excercise 12 we learned how to import flash into websites, in the process i got a better understandinf of ap elements. In project 2 i feared using ap elements because i had little to no knowledge about it, but for project 3 it'll bbe diferent. PEACE OUT.

Exercise 12

So exercise 12 actually gave my brain a jump start for some ideas to Project 3. The idea of pop up windows got me started on a string of other ideas for this project and for the first time, I do not have to wait until the last minute for an effective idea to stick. In addition, the pop-up windows were really easy to do, so I don't have to think hard about how to do it. I've got a clear image...however, I my problem at the moment is picking my favorite idea!

ex 12

ex 12 was really easy and fun :) and cute. I still haven't done my sketch for project three. since there's no boundaries, it's really hard to figure out what you want to do.

For project two, I felt like everyone put mine to shame. Everyone in this class is too damn good haha no joke. It's just that I have such an awful memory so I completely forgot about AP elements, roll overs, etc. I'm going to try and incorporate all of that into my next project.

I cant wait to use the sound wavs too :) I hope we can use them. I was wondering if there was a way where the sound didn't start automatically once you open the web page. I'll ask prof. anderson about that next class.

Ohhh and pop-up windows! I always wondered how people did that. Anyway, hope everyone has a great veteran's day tomorrow :)

Program Interfaces

Working last week in Illustrator and Flash gave me an idea about the design and interface of the two programs. Illustrator is to Flash as Photoshop is to After Effects.
Illustrator and Flash are primarily vector and have a hard interface. What I mean by hard in this case is you can only get to certain effects if certain conditions are met. You have difficulty finding effects unless you know where they are. Many commands are grayed out in these programs. This is like a programmer’s interface. Illustrator and Flash have a high learning curve.
Photoshop and After Effects are primarily raster and have an easy interface. In these softwares you can access most commands and effects all the time, there are multiple ways to access a command, and the interface is intuitive.
An advantage of Flash is that it can produce scalable compact online files. After Effects files are much larger. After Effects can produce movie and effects content wonderfully and can be learned faster than Flash, but it can’t produce interactive content.
An advantage of Illustrator is that it can produce and edit scalable vector files which can be imported to Flash or After Effects. The color settings also used to be better for printing than Photoshop I think. This is my opinion of the softwares.

Project 3

Project 3 sounds really interesting but I'm having artist's block once again trying to think of an effective design that appeals to me. I am mostly drawn to bright colors and anything that really opens my eyes to something new. However, it just is not coming. My ideas always come like 2 days before its due and then I'm trying to vomit out everything as fast as I can before the due date. Its stressful but that's how my brain works.

And i was wondering if I should attempt to do the class design for the project but...I have limited experience compared to the other students who are much higher up than I am. I could just give it a try, since there is no harm but still...

Overall though, I'm extremely excited to see other people's designs for Project 3 because everyone has such creative ideas. Mostly everyone's work on Project 2 was stunning to me and when the Professor said that Project 3 must be "stunning" I don't know how everyone is going to beat that! However, I know everyone will come up with great ideas....and they will all go above and beyond what the professor requires so it will be nice to see students' artwork at its greatest. Hope I can achieve that. Wishing everyone good luck on it!

Project 3

I think it is awesome that Professor Anderson is giving us a chance to create a page instead of writing a paper! I think our class is very capable of coming up with a creative page. Please do not use stars, it seems over done. Think of a building block or something that needs all parts to work, I am thinking something to do with latters or stairs. I am certainly brainstorming, but I am worried how I would execute my idea. I am not that good with illustrator, I wish I had a pen tool that would make it alot easier. Can we use photoshop to make a page?

It is also very exciting to know that this project will be published online for friends and family to see what we have been working on. Anyone who knows me would never think I could create a website, so I am looking forward to showing them all I actually can. That creates a little bit of pressure but I want to deliever my best work for the final project!!

Image size is everything!

I didn't realize how important it is to have a small image or .gif on your website until project #2. I assumed that since my opening .gif file opened and played normally when i would preview it while working on it in dreamweaver that it would also work when i entered the site. I wish dreamweaver would have some how let me me know that my file would be to big or recommend i use a smaller size. Hopefully i can use a smaller version of this .gif file for project #3.

I can't believe I missed it...

I was looking forward to see all the projects on Thursday, but I had a really bad case of a swollen throat. It seems like there were some really good projects, from what I've read. I be it was fun to see what everyone came up with. I had done one that was like a fish tank. It was not that complicated or fancy, but I thought it was a bit cute.

I felt that I was able to design more using Dreamweaver than using HTML, but Dreamweaver gave me some good headaches. Over all, the project was fun.

I’m looking forward the next project.

This class is making me think of minoring in web design…..

Project 2, Cool Ideas

Some of the Dreamweaver websites were really creative. The clock, Wizard of Oz, and the one with the return tower were very memorable. There were also more errors in the websites than in last project, but I would have had errors in my site if we hadn’t been given the extra couple of days. The projector did make the colors in my site much lighter, more bland, and more blurry, but that won’t affect it online anyway.
Perhaps I’ll have an explosive image for escaping upon self destruct of the super computer, but of course if I did so the art page must still be accessible and working after the explosion and return to it from the home page. I did consider the idea, but didn’t have time make it, figure out if it was possible, or decide if it was a good idea.
Even though I double checked everything, I’m still slightly surprised my site went off without a hitch. The more complex any project is the greater the likelihood of errors. Even with the errors I’m impressed with a lot of the creative ideas everyone had.

Check out this Website!

I happened to stumble across the website of the musician Jason Mraz. I love how creative and interactive it is, which makes me want to do so much more with my web design projects. The navigation is very simple and it is consistent with the entire website. I like how the information once you click on each heading in the navigation bar pops out from a different corner of the page. This element, plus the use of sound effects makes this website very dynamic. This website certainly relates to Project 2's theme of self portrait. Jason Mraz's website is certainly a figurative portrait of this artist. Check out the site and see for yourself what a fun free spirited person Jason Mraz is

I don't know

Project two is finally DONE!!!!! I love my website, i've put so much effort into it, I'd cry if it disappears. I really went all out, there was so much to do with this project even though i wasn't able to use flash. During the process of making the web site i had to go through tedious acts of repetitively inputting links and layers within images. At one point i really said this isn't cut out for me, my brains will explode before i finish a website on my own terms. So right now I don't know if you really want to proceed with this web designing phase or not. I don't knowwwwww.

A head start with Illustrator

Most of the time when creating something in illustrator you should try and make original vectors; either by hand in illustrator or by drawing out your idea and using the live trace tool to turn it into a vector. From time to time though we all find ourselves running short on time and/or creative inspiration. So here a a couple stock vector sites that might kick start your imagination or give you the foundation you need to create your own brilliant illustrations.

An easy to do flash website?!?!?!?

How are those websites coming along? It sure is time consuming!!!!

Anywho, I am a fan of G4, a channel devoted to video games, and all things geeky. I was watching one of my favorite shows, Attack of the Show, and often they show viewers some cool and interesting websites. One of them was:

http://www.wix.com/create/website

This site allows anyone to create a Flash website with a drag and drop interface!!! Although to make a unique flash website it is best to use Actionscript, however this is a nice tool for quick and fast website making.

Dreamweaver is cool

I took a web design class before but was scared with html tags and dropped but still need to go on. Now got past that part and using dream weaver is cool to use with iwork and photoshop making website is still a lot of time to do.

I love pandora.

Created by the Music Genome Project, Pandora offers a unique Internet radio service by playing related songs not based on the likes and dislikes of other people, but based on how close together the songs are musically. This cool website is great for putting music on in the background while you surf or work.

Graphic Programs Strengths and Weaknesses

This is in response to Logan’s Art Software post, but I thought it was a topic that might be useful to everyone. Different graphics software is useful for different things.

If it’s Simple

For small images not involving gradation in colors MS Paint is very good. If you are creating an image from scratch, doing detailed pixel work, want only hand picked colors, clear cut edges, and precise perfect pixels (rather than an imprecise blurry brush) then Paint works best. The Photoshop pencil also has some problems. If you have any slowdown the stroke will come out like a series of circles. Paint won’t do this. Paint can’t zoom out to less than 1x so it’s unwise to work in it with huge images Paint BMP files open in Photoshop and you can make GIF files out of them easily.

If it’s Complex

Photoshop is best for fairly high res photographic files. The layers, transparency, gradient effects and the magic wand are really useful. I’m currently using it to fill in colors on character drawings. The magic wand saves so much time with this. Photoshop is the most versatile program of this list. The PSD file size is awful! Save them as LTZ compressed TIF files, include multiple layers if you wish, and you lose nothing.

If It Should Be Vector

Illustrator is like an advanced version of Paint to deal with the high res demand except that it is vector and also much less user friendly. “Paint Vista” is not easy to learn and it’s difficult to manipulate images in. This may be because it is vector. Paint images can easily be live traced with it and the result is usually good unless the image is really small.

Don’t Get It

Corel Draw is even more confusing than Illustrator I don’t understand it.

No Idea

I haven’t worked in Gimp. I don’t know much about it.

Like Photoshop

I haven’t used Paint Shop Pro, but I know Photoimpact. I was able to learn Photoshop faster because I had Photoimpact before it. Sorry if I said too much.

Size Confusion

I’m not sure what the maximum size of a webpage that doesn’t scroll should be. Firefox, Safari, Opera and Explorer’s screen size all seem different. On top of this a screen filling page looks small on monitors with higher resolution. What the largest non-scrolling size for the average monitor and browser?

AHHHHHH part 2

I'm Kevin Lee by the way =D

AHHHHHHH

WOW web designing takes so much work. Today i worked on my project, the transcending the universe one. From 11am-2pm, I've only managed to dish out three pages on my website. Each page wasn't even magnificent, all there is to it was an image and a qoute. It's because each picture must be scanned, colors need editing, and then i had to cut them up becuase the iamges i had were too big. Bottom line is, web designing isn't an easy task. Image how much time it took if i had only html, i would cry. This just makes me wonder if my website took so much effort, how much does it take to accomplish a popular website with animation and just mind blowing effects.

Self-portrait proj

ugh I regret not coming to class on Tuesday. If I knew there was going to be an exercise on Tuesday, I would have came. I finished the exercise but it took soo much of my time. I'm not missing class anymore.

I was actually surprised I was able to do the exercise by myself. I'm definitely going to use that animation technique in my project.

I just hope I'm able to finish it on time. I have yet to start :( it's totally my fault. I guess I'm just gonna have to bust my ass next Tuesday and Thursday.

Have a good weekend everybody!

Project 2

I am excited to start on Project 2 this week. Thank you to
Dreamweaver! It is much more user friendly than HTML. I am still debating
which route to go regarding how the navigation should be designed.
Wish everyone the best of luck on Project 2.

United Football League

Hello class i want to post this blog for all the sports fans in the class, and I wanted to let you guys know that the United Fooball League debuted yesterday on October 8, 2009. There are four teams that repersent these league California Redwoods, Florida Tuskers, Las Vegas Locomotives, and New York Sentinels. The tickets are really cheap if you can not afford going to a NFL because any how LA does not have a NFL team.

Dreamweaver vs. HTML coding

Hello Class!
I love what we are learning in Dreamweaver! I have all these ideas for the 2nd project but I think they would require using Flash which we have not learned yet. I'm interested to learn about Flash and Illustrator more and how to incorporate them with Dreamweaver.

Exercise 7

Although I was behind in today's lesson, I felt much more confident and competent, as opposed to our previous exercise. I followed the PDF file and with the help of Danielle and Thomas, I was able to finish. And I must say, mine looked kick ass. (pardon my French)

For some odd reason, I think this exercise should have been more difficult but by Prof. Anderson going through it first (WITHOUT stopping) and going over it again slowly, it helped many, if not all of us.

I'm getting excited now for our self-portrait project. I was intimidated by it because it seemed like a lot of material but after doing this exercise, I'm sure everyone (including myself) will design some pretty neat sites. Can't wait to see what y'all got :)

LA Magazine Website

Hi all!

One of my favorite magazines is Los Angeles Magazine. I came across their website today and was delighted by the clean layout and graphics on their site. http://www.lamag.com/ Using roll overs on the main page perhaps? ha-ha learn something new everyday....

Raster vs. Vector Graphics

Seeing Logan's post about "Favorite Image Editors" got me thinking...

Now, for the record I admit that beside being illustratively-impaired I may just be incredibly ignorant on the subject, and I welcome anyone to correct me on the following matter.

Raster Vs. Vector Graphics. Which is better? Which can we do without?

For the uninformed (and to state my own knowledge on the subject)...

Raster images are based off individual colored pixels. Raster image files are lines and lines of these pixels, and attempts to, say, enlarge the images spreads these pixels apart. Consequently, the larger a picture gets, the fuzzier it becomes. High resolution images have more pixels per area, so they require a lot more enlargement before the fuzziness becomes apparent.

Also, these pixels are why drawing curved lines will sometimes result in "boxyness" along the edges. Anyone can see this effect clearly in MS Paint, or any lo.w-res images.

Meanwhile vector images do not use pixels. Whereas pixel image data refers to "this many pixels at these coordinates at these colors" vector image data refers to only "Point A here, Point B there, and this color in-between." Basically a vector is just Point A and Point B; the computer virtually connects the points and fills in the color in-between. The end result is smaller in data size, and because it's only two points on a map, they can be scaled proportionally upwards and downwards. The overall image is kept sharp without fuzziness or loss of quality.

Now, as anyone who's used Photoshop (raster) and Illustrator (vector) can attest to, the two image types are very different beasts. Each has their own quirks and techniques and issues.

But...as resolutions become bigger, monitors become sharper (HD and beyond), and visuals become increasingly important do you think eventually it'll pay to just have vector graphics? Converters already exist for taking a preexisting image, like a photograph, and drawing vectors out of it.

Is Photoshop only truly useful for dealing with what raster images that remain? Or would it be better if Photoshop's abilities were retooled for vector graphics, or simply merged into Illustrator?

Can vector replace raster, is what I'm saying.

Which is your favorite art software?

Some people like Photoshop, others like Illustrator, and there are those who even use MS Paint. What do you like to use and why?

-Logan

upcoming self-portrait project

I really hope I'm able to make a good webpage because the ones we saw in class we're too good haha Mine is going to look so basic and simple compared to those. I'm not great with web design, i'm pretty decent but those examples were too damn good haha

I've yet to work with "flash" and I saw that a lot of the examples worked with that program. I'm assuming we're going to learn about that sometime next week. I just hope it isn't as hard as this past Tuesday's exercise.

-Vicki Almanza

p.s. that critique we had was so harsh hahaha but soooo funny. i like that the people in this class don't take things to the heart. I can't wait for the next critique hahah

Project 1, Great Job Everyone

A lot of the websites were really good ideas executed really well. It was great to see the different creative designs people came up with. It gives you perspective on what can be done with html and what other websites could be made. Unlike math classes, in art classes people can solve a design problem many different ways and express themselves while they are doing it. That’s why art classes are much more fun. Trends in websites I noticed were sites about: cartoon characters, video games, photography, sports, and of course poems. I know Dreamweaver can do more things more quickly, but when things like the site directory go wrong it seems irreversible. Maybe knowing html will solve some of these problems. Dreamweaver not as confusing as Flash though. Flash’s user interface doesn’t make any sense to me. Hopefully I’ll learn more about these programs from this class.

Project 1

I am so proud of myself right now. Html was so HARD! at first and i can't believe i've actually created a pretty bomb website within a week and a half. Reviewing each other's websites kind of lowered my self esteem, there was so many projects that just destroyed mine like there's no tomorrow. In the end I've learned a lot, I realized how much more I am able to do with HTML and how much i want to used only dreamweaver from now on. I'm excited for project 2, it'll be much better than project 1.

k peace out

Keyboard Shortcuts

Sometimes keyboard shortcuts are helpful and cut down on the amount of time you would normally take selecting something from a menu. Pasting, deselecting, and undoing are where they come in real handy. If they use more than 2 key combinations they’re usually useless. One key shortcuts are usually time savers and easy to learn. Two key shortcuts are sometimes time savers. If anyone finds this post useful you could reply if you want.

I am INSPIRED

Hi everyone,

Wow! There were some great first projects in ART 201 today. I was amazed to see the variety of ideas and execution of html pages in class. I took a very simple approach that worked well for me, but I has blown away by some of the more complex approaches to the html project. The critique was a great experience because it inspired me to do more with my next project, and thankfully we are using Dream weaver!!!

I can't wait for Project 2!
Thanks for all the inspiration

Project 1

I'm very excited to see all the different websites that we designed in class for project one. I was intimidated by html coding at first but I feel that I will understand and value Dreamweaver more now that I know what the coding means. I wish my other professors would have tough web design with a similar technique.

Website Design Resources

These are just some sites I've come across, either with tools or tutorials that would help with making websites and their content. Enjoy!

Da Button Factory
A great site for making simple buttons. Nothing elaborate, but you can choose basic shape, color, font color, font, and input your own text. Good for quick 'n easy buttons on the fly.

Font Squirrel
A great site for free --and most importantly, free for commercial use! -- fonts to use, for both your personal and professional use.

Webslug
Allows you to compare and measure the download performance for your site, or a site and a competitor. Good for optimization.

FileZilla
A FTP program, used as an alternative to DW's built in one. Arguably faster.

Image Resource Sites
Good high-res photos are practically worth their weight in gold. Here's a compilation of ones I use.

30 Free Image Sites
Stock Exchange (requires free registration)

Tutorials, Tips 'N Tricks, and How-To's
Here are some great places to find good tutorials and tricks for graphics and website elements.

Project Seven
GUI Stuff
Creating Seamless Textures in Photoshop
A Beginner's Guide to Image Sharpening (more advanced than just the Sharpen Filter!)
Embedding Flash games on your site
Element Inspectors (for telling you what each button and field in DW does!)
Creating Framesets in Dreamweaver

Hope any of these help. If you have some of your own, add them in the Comments.
