Typography

Typography is the idea or concept of font and text. Utilizing typography is important to the viewers of your website because you should utilize text that is pleasant to the eye, as well as ergonomic. Using a black background with white text might seem like a good idea for MySpace, but not if you're creating an online article on how to repair a car engine. Using Comic Sans might sound appropriate if you're creating a comic book, but not if you're publishing a peer reviewed journal on the causes of cancer.

The important thing about Typography is understanding the purpose for your text. Question yourself about the audience that will read this text and put yourself in their place. Make sure your text is readable, aesthetically pleasing, and not a strain for the eye.

Important properties of Typography include: margin, padding, line-height, and letter-spacing. Margin and padding are important because they allow you to place and space your text. Line-height and letter-spacing are important factors to the readability of your text. You want your text to be legible, and these factors should be taken into consideration.

Stylization is different from the form factors of Typography. Color, style, decoration, and other factors are the basic implementations of stylization in CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Color is important because it creates a contrast and can set a mood. Style allows you to italicize or bold your text. Decoration is useful if you'd like to underline a specific portion of text. There are other factors such as text-shadow which are also useful to providing a specific style, which not only affects the mood of the text but the legibility as well.

A last approach to Typography includes how you input the text itself. You wouldn't want to type your entire paragraph in all capital letters. Utilizing paragraphs, line breaks, and capitalization are important towards stylization and legibility.
